TEHRAN - Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU) Secretary General Mahmud Urul Gilich has issued a statement condemning imposition of new sanctions on Iran.
Last Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council voted 12-2 in favor of a resolution imposing new sanctions on Iran. Brazil and Turkey voted “no” and Lebanon abstained. In his statement, Mahmud Urul Gilich said the recent move of the Security Council was politically motivated intended to hamper Iran’s efforts in pursuing its legitimate nuclear rights.
He also said that the IIPU is strongly opposed to the Security Council resolution.
IIPU is an affiliate of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).
Turkey, a country which along with Brazil brokered a nuclear fuel swap deal with Iran last month, has called the new sanctions against Iran a “mistake”.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has also said the Security Council had lost a “historic opportunity” to negotiate with Iran on its nuclear program by imposing new sanctions on the country.
